Dominica is one of the only places on Earth where sperm whale families stay resident all year. What that means for respectful encounters.
Most whale destinations are seasonal. Dominica is a home address. The deep water off the west coast, where the sea floor drops nearly a thousand metres within a mile of shore, holds squid year-round, and so the sperm whale families stay: grandmothers, mothers, calves, generation after generation.
The boats out of Roseau and Portsmouth work with researchers who know individual whales by the nick of a fluke. Encounters happen on the whales' terms. The captains cut the engines and wait, and more often than not, curiosity brings the whales to you.
The moment that stays with people is not the size. It is the sound: the clicks of a family talking to each other through the hull, a conversation that has been going on in these waters for longer than the island has had a name.
